When Valerie’s sister is available slashed to death through the werewolf, an event of vengeful villagers goes into search of computer. They kill a common gray wolf and believe they’ve dispatched the menace forever, but legendary monster killer Father Solomon (Gary Oldman) arrives just soon enough to prove them wrong. His is a deliciously evil role, an unhinged character that Oldman plays often and quite entertainingly, quick to persecute, invade privacy and harm without mercy. It’s a Van Helsing of sorts, fused while using maniacal strategies to a preacher intent on forcing others to don his beliefs via abuse, detailed with wild-eyed horror stories along with a giant metal elephant of torture.
Colin Firth playing Bertie/George VI is achingly genuine, even as we constantly see him bursting with frustration due to his verbal shackles. Despite his harrowing speech impediment, his warm-heart beams, specially when he interacts with Lionel Logue, played amazingly by Geoffrey Rush. We feel for Bertie, as he is trapped by his deficiency of voice so we feel his determination while he is climbing out of a dark hole. We even begin to see the envy in his eyes when he watches footage of Hitler rousing up a crowd through his oratory talent. Firth provides thoroughly magnificent performance, and equally matched by Rush’s performance as Lionel Logue. Logue is an eccentric, brash and rather clever speech therapist. He becomes a trigger for Bertie’s confidence, and guides him like a friend plus a teacher. The chemistry of both may be the heart in the film. Helena Bonham Carter also provides touching performance as Queen Elizabeth, feeling Bertie’s pain and ready him to view thing through it.
